In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

Dr. Ali Jalil Jabak and Dr. Adi Adnan Jihad, both from the Department of Environmental Engineering at the University of Babylon, have published a scientific research paper in collaboration with a foreign research team from Lule University of Technology in Sweden. The paper is titled "Integrating WQI and GIS to assess water quality in Shatt Al-Hillah River, Iraq using physicochemical and heavy metal elements." The research was published in the Applied Water Science journal, which is a peer-reviewed scientific journal ranked Q2 and indexed in Thomson Reuters ISI Web of Science and SCOPUS. The paper discusses the integration of water quality index (WQI) and geographic information system (GIS) to evaluate the water quality in Shatt Al-Hillah River in Iraq, using physicochemical and heavy metal elements. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the water quality in the river and to develop effective strategies for water resource management.
