In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

Dr. Saad Saffah Hassoon delivered a lecture on GFDM technology at a seminar titled 'The Next Generation of Wireless Communications' held at the College of Engineering, University of Kufa. The seminar aimed to introduce scientific and technological perspectives on the future of communications and information services in Iraq, the region, and the world. The seminar emphasized the importance of embracing Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, advocating for unified efforts between the public and private sectors, and encouraging academic professionals to collaborate with the public sector to address technical challenges and align academic curricula with market needs.
