In 1988, the College of Engineering became the first engineering college in the densely populated Middle Euphrates region. The departments of civil, and mechanical engineering were the first to be established, followed by the departments of electrical, chemical, environmental, architecture, and biomedical engineering.

The University of Babylon is one of the largest universities in Iraq. It is situated on the banks of the Euphrates River in the province of Babil in central Iraq. The institution is made up of 21 colleges spread across three main locations in Hilla. The central university campus is in the medical colleges complex in the center of Hilla -Al-Iskan.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, received the Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Walid Muhammad Ismail, to discuss prospects for joint academic cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, the Minister stressed the Iraqi academic institution’s keenness to develop scientific and educational partnerships with its counterparts in the region and the world. The Minister expressed the readiness of universities and educational institutions in Iraq to exchange grants and fellowships and hold conferences, workshops and joint research with Egyptian universities in the scientific and cognitive fields. The Egyptian ambassador expressed his country's desire to establish positive academic relations and enable the universities of the two countries to work together for the benefit of their peoples.
